Stephan Micus - The Garden Of Mirrors (1997) FLAC, Lossless

The Garden of Mirrors is an album by Stephan Micus, released by the ECM label. It was recorded in 1995–1996 and released the following year. It follows the tradition of all of Micus's earlier works in that he plays all of the instruments: he also provides all of the voices for the 20-man chorus in three of the tracks. Micus's inspiration for this album was two traditional low-range West African harps that he studied in Gambia: the bolombatto and the sinding. When playing these two instruments, Micus claims to have identified with early African American music, which they influenced, claiming that the bassline in jazz was influenced by these harps. Other instruments used by Micus include steel drums and four different flutes: the Japanese shakuhachi, the Balinese suling, the Irish tin whistle, and the Egyptian ney.

Al-Nûbatiyya - Chants Et Tambours De Nubie

Territoire ancestral, la Nubie se partage entre la partie septentrionale du Soudan et le sud de l’Egypte. Un carrefour, une terre de rencontre entre différents visages de l’Afrique. Riche des migrations entre milieux paysans et milieux urbains qui ont marqué la population nubienne, la musique de cette région se caractérise par un tempo qui semble s’écouler au fil du temps, sans se presser… Elle se singularise également par la séparation nette qui existe entre les répertoires sacré et profane.

Cet enregistrement, effectué à l’occasion de la saison soudanaise en 1997 à l’Institut du monde arabe, s’inscrit dans une tradition rassemblant hommes et femmes dans une dizaine de chants collectifs qui expriment l’amour, la nostalgie et le désir de paix. Des chansons souvent rudimentaires, dépouillées à l’exemple du chant rouillé de Saleh Walwali, Dolgidang ayy naafiradam (je cachais mon amour dans mon cœur) rythmé par le târ et auquel répond un chœur féminin cristallin repris par une chorale masculine imposante. Parfois, la cadence est plus vive, la mélodie plus variée comme celle de Ya jemeel sillaangi (ô belle fille où vas-tu) ou encore Fouraagin saaba (certainement votre départ sera éprouvant), une chanson dansante malgré son thème chagrin.
